Tips for Flying Like a Boss

Tips for Flying Like a Boss

It used to be that planes were kind of productivity vortexes, but these days there’s no reason to sacrifice those hours you spend flying.

Even if you’re just on board for a few hours, there’s a hell of a lot you can get done while you’re sitting on your ass with nowhere to go.

  • Unless you’ve got a teeny laptop, bring a tablet or smaller device instead.
  • Pack ultralight and squeeze everything into hand luggage so you can make a clean getaway once you land.
  • Get a set of noise-canceling headphones or quality earplugs to drown out the screaming babies.
  • If you’re going to be away from a place to charge your phone for a while, you can feed a bit of your laptop juice to your phone through a USB port, so you land with a full battery. Put smartphones onto “airplane mode” to save power.
  • Check-in online so you don’t need to hang out at the airport more than necessary, and when you do, find a cafe with a power source and/or WiFi and bang out a few hours of work.
  • Most airplanes now have at least USB chargers in the seats. Some have actual plugs.
  • Make sure your documents are all synced and backed up before you go in case you run into snags. In a pinch, you can just photograph important hard copies in case you lose them.
  • It’s old hat advice but hydrate well on a plane. It’s easy to get dehydrated without noticing, but you’ll be more productive and alert if you’re taking sips of water throughout the flight.

A long plane journey can actually be the ideal time to catch up on emails, read through documents, study, go over plans and budgets or compile reports.

Provided you didn’t luck out and get a screaming baby, there are few distractions, snacks on demand and a seat you’re more or less obligated to stay put in.

Do you work on long flights? Got any tips to making the most of it?
